Prescription
drug abuse is an underrated risky business among teens and prescription drugs
should only be used if prescribed by a professional. Since it is underrated
people think it isn’t a major problem among teens and believe teens abusing
prescription drugs over illegal drugs are worse. This belief causes people to
be ignorant of the problems that prescription drugs can cause and may lead to teens
having health problems later on during life.
Every
day in the United States, an average of two thousand teenagers use prescription
drugs without a doctor’s guidance for the first time. Many of the teens believe
they are doing nothing wrong when they compare it to the problems and
information of illegal drugs. Prescription drugs have side effects also and should
be taken into consideration when taking it.
Many
of the teens abusing prescription drugs believe prescription drugs are not as
bad as street drugs such as crystal meth. 20% of parents are even willing to
give teens prescribed drugs believing they wouldn’t abuse it or be hurt by the
effects of the drug. When people don’t think something is dangerous they tend
to not care for the problem and this causes problems when something does become
life threatening. The second parents think prescription drugs aren’t bad they
pass this belief to a teen that is in an experimental stage and follow in their
parent’s footsteps. Due to this people usually don’t lock their prescription
drugs in a place hidden from others and this allows teens to be more in reach
of the drug and allows the option for them to take the drug with no lingering
thoughts of how it is wrong.
To
avoid teens from taking these drugs while thinking it is okay for them, they
need to know the effects from a doctor and need to be ready and prepared for anything
that may happen to them. Teens are at an age to take risks and experiment with
drugs without knowing what will truly happen to them. Teens usually only take
prescription drugs to get high, treat pain, education, or physical appearances
but this may cause the teen to get addicted and most likely cause problems when
the drugs isn’t taken in safe doses. Instead of using the drug for fun or for
their future, it will take a huge toll on their body and will cause problems
that they would have to endure varying from a short time to their entire life
span. Teen are at a point in their lives where their decisions can change the
outcome of their future no matter how little the decision may be.
The
abuse of prescription drugs on a teen’s future can have a huge impact on how
society would see them from then on. Mind- altering drugs may affect a teen’s
judgment and can make the spiral downwards longer and may lead their life in a
negative direction. If a teen were to get caught abusing prescription drugs,
colleges and employers would think of them as addicts and would decrease the
amount of places they could go to limiting their future. The future after a
teen doing drugs is a future filled with side effects and shows that it is as
bad as street drugs and should not be underestimated.
In
the end prescription drugs are nothing to joke about and are as dangerous and
risky as illegal drugs. Drugs are drugs and that doesn’t change no matter what
the name of it is. Drugs are bad but only good depending on how you use it.
Drugs have side effects because nothing good comes free. Now imagine if one
pill can prolong your life, what do you think ten more pills can do?
